The flash was directed at that piston more than the #1 and #5. They all look identical. In addition, you see the bigger coolant passages on the 1 and 5? When I pulled the head, I had to wipe out those cylinders. They look darker because of that, too.

I have one question.... Am I the only one who knows where the block drain plugs are at? Or is it just a Bonneville Club thing to pull the intake and heads with the coolant still in the motor?

McGrath, Boosty'* stuff isn't spurring me on. I had my plans in place long before he started work. I've had my major components already here since December. The recent events spurring me on relate to the condition of the trans in the SLE.

Curt, I do the same thing I used to do back in the day on my old smallblock 350. I drain the radiator, then loosen the head bolts on the ends first and let the coolant drip down into two drip pans below. Then pull the head. I only got about two tablespoons in the 1 and 5, none in the 3.

I guess I'm just anal-retentive...I drain the radiator, then take out the plugs in the water jacket of the block to drain it out before taking off anything major. Like I said, I was just busting your chops...it struck me as amusing that the first photo of the heads off is showing the block still full of coolant...kinda like "man, he was in a hurry"

I have two pieces of nylone rope (1/8") 'wicking' the coolant out of the water jacket from those two holes right now. Neat trick.

Wouldn't horsehair rope yield better results?

You don't want absorbent. You just want a 'path'. And I gave it over 20 hours. I'll pull the rear head tonight.
