finally got the atv club to buy a dr mower, i have been using my uncles to do my own once a year and the thing is a beast will knock down and chew up small trees what ever. the one we got is a atv one, we got it for half price but it was sitting for 2 yrs. and would barely run, yesterday tore the carb down cleaned it and freed the choke and it idles much better but wont come up to speed when you run over trees or mow. got a plug for it and going to try to bypass the fuel filter this morning. hopefully be mowing all day.

justin, have you tried adjusting the governor? its different between briggs and Tecumseh but its fairly easy either way. briggs are notorious for the governor getting tweaked by a stick or other object getting pushed between the carb and engine block. theres a little lever the spring attaches to, and when you push it more toward the rear of the engine, the rpm drops. if that is in order, i would check the linkage coming from the fan controlled throttle. if the linkages there arent right, the rpm wont raise back up under load. the fan resists the little flap, causing the rpm to be steady. if the fan speed drops, a spring attached to that flap opens the throttle more.

it ended up being the air filter, when i initially started on the thing i just blew it out and put it back. but after i bypassed the fuel filter it still wouldnt run so i opened the air filter housing to look and see if the choke was still sticking. ran good this way so i knew it was the filter. i took some video of my FIL using it later on because i mowed a while with my rhino, stuff that was taller than the roll bars, its awesome. then my rhino started giving me trouble again so he finished up some with his quad and i was following him with mine with the bar mounted cam. have to try to remember to put it on youtube.

Set my parking brake too far and had to dismount the pedal to release it. Pushed the lever past the locking mechanism.
