check my last post, it might help on having a more advanced repair to the tutorial posted with pictures.
As for the mangled up cable... it can be straightened out with pliers. Once that cable is put back together on the motor and regulator, there should be enough tension that the mangled-ness wouldn't matter too much.

I found a place that sells these clips cheaper. These are the clips from CARPAK
