Don't assume that they are right because they do it for a living. There are more builders out there trying to cut cost corners than there are who are committed to doing it right. I've been in and out of the construction busines all my life and I know what goes on. Tyvek is currently about $100 per 100' roll that means that it would take 4-5 rolls or $400-500 to do his house.

There is NO acceptable reason not to use Tyvek (or similar product) under vinyl siding.

EDIT: There'* no excuse for forgetting to wrap your wood... :P

X2 , And Contractors use as very loose hiring system, and rely on subcontractors . It a very unstable business. I've seen where crews are put together making the rounds to local bars to see which Billy Joe Bob'* arent doing anything this week. Dont mean to scare you Jim but you really have to stay on top of it. Nice guys get screwed. Be firm and ask questions till they think your a PITA.... And yes that wiring should have come out dead on with the box... It can be elbowed to it but in alot of places thats against Code.

Fundamental construction error right there. Sure the insulation and interior vapour barrier will control moisture and temperature on the warm side (interior) but you've got nothing to protect the sheathing (plywood). You need Tyvek (housewrap)

Demand your contractor take down the siding and wrap the house properly.

The inspector will likely find that he didn't side it to code, too.

Easy guess (by local area codes). The electric box can't be fixed to the substrata, it has to be on the outermost layer. The guy to put in the box (licensed) could either do it Tuesday or a month from now. So they had the $3.25 /hr nonemployee of the subcontracter, of the subcontracter, of the contracter put up the siding. They also told him to drill a hole for the internal wires.

The box guy does have some latitude on positioning, so he goes as high as he can because the cover pipe for the wires from the street is too long to be vertical. Because he probably isn't blind, he also notices that interor lines are not quite positioned right to go into the back of the box. Interior grade lines ain't exterior spec, and he loses his license if he gets caught doing it with the above mentioned elbow no-no.

I'm sure that this whole minor mess was predicated on the box man'* schedule.

That wire cover isn't attached to anything, it'* just leaning there at the moment. We are working out the wrap issue.

Get this, the Tyvek is an upgrade... and they want to charge us to take down the siding that is already up (2/3 of the house)... 1500 for Tyvek + additional labor comes to 2400. Yeah... calls are being made.

What kind of building codes do they have out there? That'* insane.

And I'd call them out on the quantity and cost of the Tyvek too. I just checked and Tyvek is currently $102 retail per 9' x 150' roll (1350 sq. ft.). At near that price, you could buy 14 rolls to cover 18,900 sq. ft. of surface for $1500.
