Default Time to buy scanner

Searched posts on scanners but still not sure which one to get. I have enjoyed a few years of trouble free operation of my '95 88. Check engine light came on the other day. Don't want to pop another $70-80 for a scan check so its time to buy a scanner. I have the hybrid ODB1/OBD2 setup. Looks like the Autoscanner CP9145 is the unit I need. My question is do I need additional cables to get my car to talk to it? If the CP9145 isn't a good choice, what is. My budget is around $150.

This post doesn't reference any additional cables: https://www.gmforum.com/trouble-shoo...-1-5-a-306289/

I think the extra cables come in to play if you want to view OBD 1

Default P0406?

Scored a CP9145 finally. Hooked er up. Got a P0406 and P0705. P0406 doesn't show up in my OEM service manual but scanner says its pintle position on EGR. Car seems to run fine but no biggie there, I replaced it in '08 and it has a lifetime warranty ($163 @ Advance). The P0705 has me puzzled. Says its the neutral safety switch. Car starts fine, shifts fine. I did have an issue a couple days ago, turn key and nothing. Pulled and cleaned all connections to neutral switch and everything has been fine since. Both codes popped up again last night.

Just a quick question for ya. I have the Actron CP9145 also. Have used it for years on OBDII and OBDI with cable #CP9127.
I have a 1994 Le Sabre with the OBD 1.5 (OBD1 with the 16 pin connector).

Did you read the codes using your scanner? I've never been able to get a connection on mine using my scanner.

Thanks
Joel

I was able to pull the codes with the scanner. I think on a 94, you can use to ole paper clip jumper and read the flashes on the CEL.

Thanks for the reply.
I have not attempted to pull the codes by jumping pins on this 16 pin connector. Too many folks say it won't work, and there'* the possibility of damage to the ECM.
It just surprised me to see you were able to get the codes with the same scanner as I have?
Did you use the external power supply cord attached to the cig lighter?

Thanks
Joel

The second one is probably a historical code. Codes are generally stored for ~50 ignition cycles (or something like that), then purged. If it was just a couple of days ago it would still be in the memory.

I tried my scanner again, bingo! It worked just fine, got the codes with no problem. This was using a Actron CP9145 with the CP9127 OBDI cable.
Just wanted to update the thread in case anyone else is working on these odd years.
