Don't you love it when people who think they know what they are doing but really don't touch things. I love it when people come to my shop, say it was giving me some trouble, so I tried to fix it. Now it don't work at all. Good for you.
Today I did a upper and lower gasket change on a Lumina. Easy work until the car ate my 8mm ratcheting wrench. Slipped from my hand and in it went. Crud, that didn't make it to the floor. I spent a half hour looking for it. I finally finished up and put the car on ramps so I could climb under. I found it sitting on top of the sub frame. I'm banging on things yelling at the car give me back my wrench.

I'm sure I'll do the same thing. I'm swapping engines soon so that whole area is going to be redone. Cleaned up, painted, you name it. That'* the plan at least.
