alright, when I enable internet sharing it says it must change my IP address to 192.168.0.1 on the desktop, the only problem is that this is the same IP address that my router uses. now what?

Should be ok. Just don't change the IP on the PC as the ICS wizard told you. Leave it what it was, and change the gateway for the internet access on the LAPTOP, to the PC'* IP address that you DIDN'T change. Should work fine.

Not bad for an old fart, eh?
My first network setup was at home. Networked 4 PC'* and a laptop all over the house using a 10mbps HUB and ICS running off a Windows ME host PC. The other pc'* were running a mix of Win ME, 98 SE, and 95 (laptop).
Trial by fire, but I learned alot. Now I cheat. Routers are cheap and easy.

You're right... out of the box routers are cheap and easy.
Linux routers are dirty and a pita... but fun in a way.
I ditched my Linux router a year ago for a router w/ wireless.
