Please tell me if this 5.7 Vortec has CA smog devices
I live in California and am about to buy an out of state vehicle with a GM 5.7 Vortec engine swap. It’* a beautiful install job and I know that it has a catalytic converter. Unfortunately, I don’t know whether it has all the other CA smog required devices. They are:
Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR)
Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV)
Charcoal Canister (EVAP System)
Oxygen Sensor (O2 Sensor)
Air Injection System (AIR)
I’m under a bit of a crunch to make a decision on the purchase.
Can anyone knowledgeable about this take a look at the engine bay photo and confirm that they see these devices? Thank you everyone!!

I'm probably late, however, maybe some of this will be useful to others.
I used to live in CA and scored bonus points when I moved out because I don't have to deal with their draconian smog rules any more.
Hard to tell some of it from the picture. It looks like EGR is still in place and I see one side of the PCV system looking proper. I can not see a EVAP can. O2 sensor(*) are underneath therefore not visible. Depending on the Vortec 5700'* donor car it may have had the AIR system removed legally as part of a tech bulletin, either way I can't tell from the picture.
More important to this issue is:
- What model year is this vehicle? If it is 1975 or older then it is generally exempt
- Was the vehicle originally considered 49-state emissions compliant or 50-state emissions compliant?
- Is the check-engine light operable?
- Is the check-engine light off while the engine is running after the ECM test cycle is complete?
- Is the engine a larger displacement than the original engine that came with the vehicle from the factory?
- Is the engine the same model year or newer than the original engine that came with the vehicle from the factory?
There is more to consider as well, but these are the common hurdles to jump in CA and these are probably 95% of the factors that most-commonly create trouble for folks importing from other nations like the other 49 states.

. . . not to mention visible smoke and high readings during testing will fail it as well.
