Default Encore

I have a 2014 Buick Encore. It has 80k miles. Approximately 1.5 years ago the radio including the display heads up screen would intermittently go dead (screen black). The backup camera would also not work when this happened. We took it to a local dealer and they allegedly flashed in a software update and the radio seemed to be ok after that. Then this week the radio display including the backup camera did the same thing. Only this time the failure interval while still intermittent -is much worse -occurring constantly. So once again back to the same dealer. They informed me the radio was bad and the cost to replace it was 1700.00! I just happen to be a retired GM field service engineer (was a technician for several years too). So I see this problem as a comeback. The dealer also said there were no DTC’*. I’m thinking the same failure mode is occurring now as in the past.
So if anyone has experienced this type of radio and display failure -and you have any suggestions on the best next step I’m all ears. I am least interested in dropping 1700 dollars for what may be a reoccurring problem..
Thanks for your thoughts.

If it had failed a few months after the repair then I'd say you have a good case, but at 18 months it looks like a different failure to me. What I see is that their firmware update in April of 2018 fixed it for an issue that could be fixed with software . . . then October of 2019 it is actually having a real failure of some sort.

I'd say you could push this as a"comeback" if it recurred sooner. I agree it appears related, I just think you'll be spinning your wheels if you try to push that point so far after it was handed back to you working.

That having been said, you could press the issue of it being a comeback and see if they'll give you a break on labor if you find a used one out there . . . then find a used one.
