I'm thinking it'* either that or just bad gas. The way it'* acting (getting better, that is), I'm leaning more towards bad gas.

I suppose it could be the MAF sensor, but your symptoms really do sound like bad gas (including the puffing each time the engine tries to burn some water). If it is bad gas, changing the filter becomes a priority. It could now be a reservoir for water. Because the fitting on the front of the filter is low torque, you might be able to undo it OK with open end wrenches or maybe even a good adjustable wrench. Come to think of it, I had to use a 13/16" open end for one of the nuts cause none of my flare wrenches fit the bigger nut tightly. The rear clip you just pinch with your fingers and pull.
