Well auto Zone culd test the charging system because the battery on their test equipment was dead (go figure!). i'll have that done some other time i guess. BUT i put in an Optima (red one...) and it fired right up! The cables look just fine, no corrosion. i just need to clamp it in place now, lack of tools while up at central.

Tracy, realizing the gauges contain a little inaccuracy by default, it'* best to check with a multimeter between the battery terminals. That willl give you the exact reading.
