Bada Boom, Bada Bing.
The security light indicated a problem with the Pass-Key II system, so the dealer is eliminating all possibilities.
Your cheapest option is to try and start with two new keys from somewhere that can make them with the resistor. Then if you still have problems, bye-bye lock cylinder...
How critical is having your car? To get it done by the dealer might save you the hassle now.

well my GF'* dad built his own 10 second hemi cuda basicaly by himself, and his best firend is a pontiac parts guy for 32 years... between them i think we can figure this out, i can get a key from pontiac for $36. but do they have to have the car there to make it or why do i need luck with the keys?
I thought you wanted to get it somewhere cheaper than the dealer, and it is hard to find someone that makes those keys, hence, good luck.
Whoever is making the key needs to know the correct resistance in the pellet. The dealer can look it up on a database, but anyone else will have to measure the resistance in the old key.

ok so i have someone else do the cylinder and then goto the dealership and tell them i need keys. does the dealership need to look at the new clyinder (have the car in the shop) or just go on the database?
My 97 Lumina does the same 'security' thing occasionally. I can usually clean the 'pill and the pill reader in the ign. switch with alcohol and a Q tip but I found out that if I put the key in the freezer for a hour or a little less it works??? I'm not kidding, found this trick when I had some ice cream and made a stop at a friends house, put the ice cream and the key ( so I wouldn't forget the i.cream} in the freezer, darned thing worked fine for months.....that'* been 3=4 years ago still have to do it from time to time ...go figure
