Rusty Trim Issues
Prep is everything. If it is really rusted up, primer first and I think you will find with 2 spray top coats, that rust is not going to come back easily William.

Well, did not bother to try to do a write up, I found at the back of each door, I think it was a 7mm, I for got to look, I'll check when I put them back on...
The really bad rear passenger side one was easy to clean up as the stuff was already peeling off, but the front one is still nicely attached, and it looks like I am going to scratch it up badly trying to scrape the stuff off.
So now I am thinking is 80.00 a piece that bad to never have to worry about them for pretty much the rest of the cars life.....

Yeah, ummmm I may have to buy new trim...
The piece I got all the plastic off of and sanded looks good primed, but the one that was not too bad I just sanded the plastic, and it does not look as good....
The third piece I am working on I accidentally sliced into the rubber strip that goes against the window, not horrible looking, but I am not happy with it at all...
The only way to remove the rest of the plastic coating is some kind of stripper, one that won't in turn damage the weather stripping attached to it, I tried a heat gun and that would only have a chance working if the weatherstripping was not on the trim...
So I am stuck at throwing out 325.00 or so, or trying to figure out how I can strip this plastic off with out messing up the weatherstripping....
Any ideas?

Jeez not much fun. Do you have any commercial body shops close by?
My thought is they may have a solution in one of their commercial stripping products.
Who knows they may even say " I'' ll have that off for you in a second"

I am trying the heatgun again, the heat and scrape is kind of working, but I'll have to scrub the remaining plastic off with something like a Brillo pad, some ISO alcohol, etc...
Then sand the **** out of it..
I'll do everything I can before I spend 300+ on new trim..

Been at it for hours, so far 1 clear coated twice and now done, looks good, may not need to wet sand..
Tried to put a little more primer on one that only had a small split in the plastic coating, no rust...
So far it looks better, I may go ahead and finish this other one I began striping with heat, but the last two I'm just going to sand the plastic, prime it, paint it, clear coat it, and see how long it lasts.
If I am working again I'll gladly buy the new trim, the windows could use new weather stripping that is in the trim...
I guess if the trim is bad and totally peeling the job is not too bad, but if the plastic is in good condition it is too much of a headache to remove, unless somebody knows of a good way to strip that plastic coating without damaging the weather stripping...
I'll try to get pics before I reinstall them, I am trying to get them back on before it rains again, yeah I know some water gets in and drains out from time to time, still not trying to let it get in near any electronic window switches...
