Default Rusty Trim Issues

Well, the trim under my Driver and passenger side windows are peeling, and the passenger side is peeling and rusting.

I am not sure how to fix the issue, I think I found the trim at a dealership, but the parts are discontinued, so they are like 100.00 each, which is ridiculous...
I could maybe try to remove all of the plastic that is coming off, use painters tape and some Krylon Plastic paint, or something similar to make the ares look better.
Sorry pics are a tad blurry...

Any suggestions?

I could try to mask the area, hit it with some sandpaper, then spray this stuff on...
I have got to stop that rust though...

Amazon Amazon

Wonder if it would need this afterwards?

Hmmmm, looks decent...

I could try the rustoleum...
Looks like sand, prime, paint, clear coat...
Wonder if that will match my gloss black paint?

What I really want to know is this, can I sand that rusted one enough to paint it and not worry about it rusting up again soon, or should I replace that one with a new piece of trim? One that costs 103.00 ..... :/

Just found this thread, I was slacking and lazy, shame on me, lol
I am guessing mine would be similar, it looks similar anyway.

Trying to decide on a primer, paint,, and since the paint I am considering is matte, maybe a clear coat.
Unless somebody has a better idea..

I am looking at this, while it is considered a coating, I am wondering if it will act as a primer?
Amazon Amazon

Or should I sand it, coat it a bit with that stuff, then spray on a black primer like the following.
Amazon Amazon

Then use this..
Amazon Amazon

And last but not least a clear coat?

Rust-Oleum 327864 American Accents Ultra Cover 2X, Gloss Clear

Or am I overthinking this?

The trim and bumper paint have a rust fighter formula, so I wonder if that could act as my primer,, then I hit it with a clear cat gloss?

Or I could try to do as Sawwgunner did,, just use black enamel gloss...
I just want it to last, and look decent...

I think I will just sand and use some gloss black on them.

I am wondering if mine are removed the same on my Grand Prix as Sawgunners wwere on his Bonnie?

Also, anybody ever removed the two roof trim pieces?
I may have to tape them off and sand/paint them on the car..

I should dig out my other FSM,, I am pretty sure the second Vol covers body parts....

Painting on rust will bubble eventually, but $103.00 worth? That'* for you to decide. If it were me, I'd take some extra time on the rust to get it gone then put a couple of extra layers of paint to smooth it out in those spots.

I planned to sand it with some 400 grit, then some 600 grit if needed,
I found each trim part new for 75.00, still that would be 300.00 in trim for the 4 pieces, not including the roof trim pieces need painting or replacement..

I will sand it good then put like 4 light coats on it, and see how it looks afterwards.

Eventually once I put my new hood and front bumper on I need to pain the whole car,, a nice gloss black like it is will cost me a good bit, I do not want somewhere like Maco doing it...

Ya on a few spots on my car I had to sand and paint and need to do a few more on the door molding areas too.
I taped it off & started with 1000 grit, cleaned it well, and then went to Professional Rustolium in black, looks 10x better.
I am also going to need to find some spray/ Adriatic blue, darn rust spots now showing in a few places on body after the salt last winter.
Fun..Darn old cars..lol.

Ok, not sure if I want to tape off the trim and paint these, or if I want to remove them.
I have the sand paper, primer, paint, and clear coat.

The front look like I have to remove one bolt/screw, then most of the trim comes up, to get the rest I am going to have to remove the whole door trim, then the triangle trim over the mirror, and then loosen the bolts to let the mirror hang a bit, which also means I need to pop out my Weathertech rain guards, as they come all the way down and sit on top of the area that needs to come up.

As for the rear, I see no screws, but I am guessing I'll remove the door trim, and see how to pop it out.

Been windy and rainy for a while now, just waiting for a fair weather day...
