Wow.. quite the giggle out of some of the suggestions here.

And whoever said a Dodge anything V10 got 20mpg..thank you..I nearly peed myself. Best one i've heard in a while. (musta gotten that while on a flatbed).

For low cost and reliable..I agree. The S10'* and Rangers are the clear choice. Parts are cheap and easy to obtain, they are for the most part easy to repair.

I said that. If a 67 Impala with a 283 can get 28 to the gallon, I don't see why a V10 can't get 20

I don't often call BS straight out on anyone, but this is frankly ridiculous.
There is very little that can be done to INCREASE fuel mileage, and certainly nothing that is going to get a Dodge V10 up to 20MPG. Simply put, the V10 was a guzzler, and the 15mpg EPA rating was extremely optimistic. Real world, you're gonna be lucky to get 12mpg out of that thing.
Quite frankly, an aging V10 is not going to get that kind of mileage, period.

xDRx, you've got a pretty good range of choices here.
My personal preferences are:
4.3 *-10 or *-15(the heavier suspension offering from GMC)The 2.2 is also a good motor, if a little small for my tastes. Avoid the 2.8.
5.2 V8 Dakota, or the 3.9 V6.
Any Toyota compact will be okay as a work truck, they're pretty tough.

Avoid Rangers. The four bangers are underpowered, and the 4.0 isn't worth putting up with the massive rust problems.

Ok thanks for the suggestions y'all. Looks like I'll be looking for an early-mid 90'* *-10 based on all your suggestions!

Now I gotta save for 6 months and find one!

If you come across the *-15, jump on it. Much heavier suspension...
