#31
mmm, thank goodness i don't need to buy gas.....i haven't been to the station today, so i couldn't tell if anyone was buying gas. its a good idea in theory, but it just won't work because now they KNOW its coming! they're just gonna leave everything the same!

EDIT: Wow this is a popular topic. The up arrows are referring to Grim'* post.
^^^^Although at the end of what you said you kinda made a mockery out of it, what you are saying is so right. Pretty much every other business has to absorb fluctuations in other prices....arg, I don't know how to say this.
Here is what I am saying. Pretty much every business is affected by the price of gas, yet they take the hit. They are not as easily capable of changing their prices, so they have to absorb the costs. Their profits take a hit.
For some reason, gas companies aren't this way. Refinery goes down....they change the price. Every other company takes a hit in profits, but gas companies capitalize and post record profits. How does that work?

We were discussing this in econ last week. Not buying gas on May 15th will only work if:
You carpool if you usually drive seperately
You don't even start your car at all
You skip driving anywhere -the oppertunity cost for this is how important it is to you to be at the destination you are skipping.
So, just don't start your car and get as many other people to carpool..... basically your only way of having any effect on gas prices....... People don't understand.

Exactly. Not pumping on a day is not changing demand. Its like everyone not buying produce one day. If you never change your produce eating habits, there is no noticeable change.

supply and demand dictate prices. not buying gas for a day doesnt change the demand, it just delays it. if the oil companies really wanted to make a large profit bad enough, theyd raise prices tomorrow. that way everyone who put it off has to buy. you effectively RAISE demand immediately following these days. seriously. i wish people understood how stupid this stuff is.
from the preliminary research i did on this, a "gas boycott" lasting one day has NEVER lowered gas prices in the history of industry. do we not bother learning from history any more?
