Did you say you know how to hook up two harddrives or not?

Booting to a cd is easy, just pop the cd in the tray while the computer is on. then restart the computer and an option should come up that says boot to cd press any key. press a key and you will have options to format and install windows xp. but remember to do that after you back up your info! if you need help on hooking up two hard drives let me know and i will do a write up for you real fast.
No thanks, I'm pretty sure I know how to do this, but my dad is a little hesitant about letting me take apart the new computer, so I may just transfer the files to an even older computer(via HD swap), burn them, and then just put them on the new one using the burned CD. Thanks guys...

Sorry if I'm rewinding the topic a little bit, but how long did you wait on the startup screen after it appeared to freeze before you hit reset or shut it down? If you didn't wait at least a minute or two, it'* entirely possible that the OS is just idling -- WinME may be trying to initialize the new network card, and the network card is trying to obtain a dynamic IP with a DHCP request (new network card installs generally default to dynamic, as opposed to static, IPs). If that request goes unanswered, the network card continues to request every so often until a certain amount of time elapses, and then reports to the OS that it wasn't able to obtain an IP. During this time, though, the computer generally appears "frozen."

I think 97 waited for quite a bit. Last time he posted sounded like he was going to back up his old files then install XP on the ME drive. Yea, NIC'* can take a while to load up sometimes especially on servers with many clients, but he just has a small workgroup which shouldnt take to long to do a diagnostic, but it sounded like ME just shut down. I never liked ME. Always felt Microsoft just put it together real fast without putting some effort into it.

OK, as an update... I was able to make a boot disk off of my XP, and tried it on the ME. I got into DOS, and with the help of my uncle, was able to restore to a former, working state. Now, networking is a whole nother question...
