The 04+ model, while a bit heavier is a great car and I prefer the interior environment over the 97-03. The looks took a bit of a downturn but its purpose built and is affordable. The series 3 L32 is just as modifiable as the L67.

Try looking for a Regal GS. Same car, but with a better interior, and slightly lower insurance rates. You also have an older demographic driving them, so you're less likely to get one that'* been beaten like a mule.
