I have a 05 Chevy Silverado z71 5.3 I am rebuilding I took the engine apart and didnt fine a chain dampaner/tensioner.i have looked and looked for 1 even checked local parts houses none to be found for that engine.it has the holes there for 1 but I can't fine one.i know the 08 and 10 5.3 have them.so my question is does the 05 5.3 have them or not? AND IF NOT WHY SO MUCH SLACK IN CHAIN? THE CHAIN IS NEW AND SPROKET AND GEAR ON CAM.IS THIS NORMAL TO HAVE AT LEAST 1/4 in slack in chain.if it does require a dampaner where can I get 1 if not someone please help me thanks

If it didn't have one when you tore it down I wouldn't be trying to add one. A quarter inch of movement is not excessive.

Here'* a video on that engine. At just over 20 minutes in they get to the timing set. This has close to 1 inch movement.

Yeah, it doesn't have one. I've never heard of one too stretched or worn out unless it had over 300,000 on it. Even then, I have a 2001 that is just short of 310,000 and it'* fine. A friend of mine got her 2003 5.3 up to 330,000 and someodd miles on very-limited oil changes and it was fine too . . . finally died of a bad u-joint while unintentionally in 4-high for many miles of pavement.
