Same thing happened to me with my new car. When I was buying it I told the dealer I wanted them to flush the Dex out and put in the Prestone. They said they won't put anything but the back Dex in it. They did a flush but I plan to do my own flush and get this out soon.

I had that problem in Sept, and the pontiac Dealership fixed it. Hope they used the new gaskets. I think they also put the Dex in. If Id know this was the problem, when it happened, they wouldnt have. Damn!!!

I have been flushing the coolant every spring in my 99 regal gse(owned 5 years since it had 8,000 miles) and replacing it with the prestone replacement and so far no problems and immediatly did my 97 ssei after I bought it. So what I understand here is prestones replacement for Dex is OK but GM'* actual Dex is no good . I was just going to flush both soon and repalce with regular green but if Prestones is OK I will just leave it and flush them both this spring again .

I'm not aware of anyone who really knows for sure on the Prestone Dex-compatible. I would not recommend going back the the standard green (ethylene glycol) formulation. If you feel uncomfortable with the Dex-compatible, I'd suggest the other Prestone Long Life formula - listed as "all makes/all models" instead.

as i have read in a different post (that i'm too lazy to find right now), prestone dex-cool compatible and prestone extended life (mixes with all coolants) have the same chemical formula. The only real difference is dex-compatible is dyed orange so it looks like dex-cool and costs about $2 more per gallon

I think I recall the thread that you are referring too, and I believe it said that the same ingredients were listed on the bottle. I checked that, and it is true. That however does not say that the formulations are the same, as there could be different amounts of each chemical in the different bottles.

I'm not saying that they are not the same...I'm saying I don't know. I DO know that the "all makes/all models" is not Dex.

True. I used to think dex-cool was was a really awesome invention, and who wouldn't, knowing that it was orange and didn't have to be flushed often. but i spent hours on this site and read about all the issues related to it and have to say i'm proud the prestone "mixes with all" is going into my "new" engine and it will never have dex in it again as long as i own it. Thanks everyone for opening my eyes .
