I think my advice would be this:

Be very careful and take EXTRA vigilant care of a 4T65E, and at the same time, be prepared for your first mechanical failure between 60-75k miles. If you want a Series 2 SSEi and don't plan on a PCM (other mods are fine), you might want to seriously consider a 1996 with the 4T60E(HD).

There were 4T60-E'* in GM cars through 1998... But they were not in the Bonneville for the 98 model year as they all got the 4T65-E

In 97, the L36'* were attached to the 4T60-E where as the L67 was attached to the 4T65-E, in 98 all 3800'* got the 4T65-E... There were some N bodies in 98 that still used the 4T60-E.. Later to be replaced by the 4T45-E

Over 155,000 on my '97 SE, so probably a 4T60E, right?

Anyway, no trans failure yet, though it does make noise like slippage in 2nd. It has been flushed twice. Once at around 60K and just recently at about 150K.
