Default In Regards to 'Kill Stories'

I guess this isn't so much a suggestion to the admins as it is to the whole BC populace...(and it will go on and on and ON...um, because my thoughts aren't connecting as they should today.)

As many of you know, my vehicles' combined horsepower MIGHT, on a lucky day, average above 12 or 13. Thus I do not street race with them, and I wouldn't even consider it unless my opponent happened to be a geriatric golf cart with a flat tire. (In which case I wouldn't lose as bad)

It is also my personal opinion that street racing is dangerous, not only to the opponents but to EVERYONE nearby, as well as property. Sure, it'* fun and exciting, but how would you feel if a family member or even a pet was an 'innocent bystander' and was injured or killed because of a street race? How would we as BC members feel if someone from our club died in a street race? If one of your forum friends died this way, would you continue to race?? I would hope that you guys who race can at LEAST be 'responsible racers' and try to figure out a place to go that'* out of town, where if something happened, you wouldn't cause harm to other people who don't ask to participate in your sport. Other people are depending on YOU to drive responsibly, the same way that you depend on others to drive responsibly. If this doesn't work, try to encourage your city to put in a local sanctioned drag strip. Many cities can earn extra dollars this way.

There'* no law that says it can't happen to you. It happens to lots of people, and usually to the ones who'd write it off as a 'worst-case' scenario that will never happen to them.

Anyway, because I don't race, I don't really read Kill Stories often, nor do I have emotional ties to the forum. But I too have noticed the increasing amount of general BS flying around on that forum. Instead of laughing about some funny stuff, people are being antagonistic, and seeming to be out to prove that everyone else is a faker or a poser, or what-have-you.

It really annoys me that somehow, suddenly everyone who drives a Civic is now a 'ricer'. Forgive me if I am wrong, but isn't a ricer someone who takes an incapable vehicle and tries to make it LOOK fast...to make it LOOK like a more capable vehicle, purely for the image? Most ricers I know wouldn't even pull that kind of stuff unless it was another ricer at the stoplight, or a granny in a minivan, both of which they might have a chance at beating.

I don't classify someone with a 'tricked-out' car we all know is crappy (like an Aspire). It'* not economical, but maybe they get a kick out of seeing such a ridiculous car get even more ridiculous. I get a laugh out of it too, because it'* like someone making the best out of a bad situation. It'* not like it hurts me or my image, so why should I care? Why should you?

I don't classify someone who drives a Honda, a small import (or domestic) car as automatically being a ricer. I drive a Honda, and no, I'm not going to tell you it'* a bad car. It'* spartan... yes. It'* generic...yes. But it gets me where I need to go, and as a dirt-poor student, that'* all I want from it. My Subie has a little more class than the civic but she'* still not my ideal vehicle. Please remember that there are a great many of us out there who would much rather be seen in a Bonneville. Much of our vehicle choices are because of what we don't have, not because of what we want to have.

Anyway...moving on...I think the problem is equal parts stories that are obviously 'fish stories' and people who are out on 'BS witch hunts' every time they browse Kill Stories. Not only do we have fakers, but we have people LOOKING for fakers...that combo takes away much of the on-topic-ness of the Kill Stories forum, in my humble opinion.

My opinion on the whole 'faker' thing is this; why should you care? If someone is posting some impossible story about how their '92 SE wasted a Corvette...why not let THEM be retarded? Anyone who knows anything about cars knows this couldn't happen, so there'* no reason for every Captain Obvious on BC to point it out. What these people want is attention. Pretty soon these people will figure out that they're not going to get attention, and will move on.

And finally...people who post about every single stoplight encounter and every (parked?) Trans Am they blew by ...get off it! Maybe you should post only your 'best of the best' and build a website for the rest, if you simply CAN'T live without telling a horde of other people about it. I'm surprised that you guys (you know who you are) can find time to actually RACE after spending hours posting about every little inch you had over another vehicle. It'* annoying to go to 'Kill Stories' and find that the last five topics are all by the same person, and what'* worse, all have the same basic story.

OK, well...I should quit ranting now. But here are my suggestions: Recognize that only RICERS are in fact, ricers. Some people just like to make their dumb cars look even worse. let them be, unless they try to pick something with you. Don't go on BS witch hunts, and when you find BS, don't even reply to it. And for the love of betsy, don't post about every little stoplight encounter you ever had. It gets old fast.

I really hope I am not out of line by making this post, but I felt something should be said...

As a general summation goes, that just about covers it.

Its nice to see some valid opinions about Kill Stories, I invite furthur CONSTRUCTIVE posting in this thread for it will help the Staff of BonnevilleClub gage what to do based on what the members want or feel.

Please have at it....

To me the "Kill" section is like fishing stories. This fish gets bigger with every telling much in the same way the speeds and launches get quicker in the kills section.

I had made mention a few months ago when they were streamlining the site to combine kills with general chat. That way if the race had something to add to the overall bonneville community then go ahead and post, if it was to boast about blowing by a yugo then who cares? A quick search shows I have only 7 posts in kills since my joining and four of those are from this month?
As for how this affects me? When admin is busy working of controling the kills section we are not getting other things done and our time is lost.

ps. post more pics of fish and leave the street racing to hollywood.

i was nice but there is to much flameing on certain members and causeing members to get annoyed with the reply to a thread replace it with something more like certain infomation like recall'* or something of that nature the BC already has a 1/4 mile restriy what more do they need that should kill a the fish stories and wont promote illegal actions of street racing

I think a "Road stories" forum would work. Not just kills but stupid, funny, wierd things that happend while driving. Like a campfire thing?

What we always talk about at MNBC meets....

BadTA00

I have copied your post and added it to this thread

I'm just throwing in my $.02 about this subject.

I don't use kill stories alot but I like to see what kind of kills are being posted. I might question a kill that seems to good to be true sometimes but I try to do it in a constructive way. I don't get many street races but when I do I'll:

1) Go to a safe location or do it as safe as possible
2) Post it when it happens and if I get BS responses take it in stride ask questions and restate the facts and look at the situation.

From what I'm reading is that it'* to much trouble for the Admin to watch and enforce. I can see why, with 3 moderators and 2 admin to cover the whole board they're overloaded. I've also noticed in the threads that are locked that it seems like the same individuals are involved.

MY SUGGESTION:
Get more Moderators. Give them specific areas of responsibility so they don't have to roam the whole board looking for trouble. The most that each Moderator should have responsibility over should be 5 or 6 Forums. You can have 2-3 Moderators per Forum and they can also Moderate other forums when necessary but their primary ones will have their names by them.

Also start punishing offenders. Warn them VIA Private Message, Warn them Openly,Blur their post, Ban them temporarily or permenantly
We really don't need 3 threads about Kill Stories

The ability to have specific moderators for specific forums is very difficult, this version of the software makes it impossible for a moderator to have free access to move and split threads. We all need free access to all forums in order to properly moderate.

As for new and additional staff. That is underway, thats all I am privied to say at this point.

And finally Kill Stories needs a dose of maturity. Its locked to prove a point. I attempted to lay down the law, my warning was not heeded (as Smellbird mentioned), furthur to that, the warnings from the Administration was not heeded. The results...no one is allowed to post in Kill Stories.

Frankly, I'm 100% behind Jay in his post. I won't miss it

First off to Bonnephile well said.

Secondly.
I used to read the kill when I first joined almost 2 years ago ( wow I didn't think it has been that long). After a while it was the same thing over and over then alot of BS stories started. I didn't see any point reading it anymore cause it was getting to be really stupid. I still don't read them and don't plan on it either cause I know that most of them are probably BS and I have better things to do with my time.
I think it was a good idea to lock it and agree that it won't be missed after a few months by some. But some will realy miss it and to them maybe they should set up their own website for their "kill stories".

I'm not saying that you can't moderate other forums because yes you need the power to move and split threads but give moderators a designated area to work so they can spend their time enjoying the Club as well as Moderating.

MY SUGGESTION:
Get more Moderators. Give them when necessary but their primary ones will have their names by them. Check out the following sites. I know they might use different software but see if there is similar layout you can use.specific areas of responsibility so they don't have to roam the whole board looking for trouble. The most that each Moderator should have responsibility over should be 5 or 6 Forums. You can have 2-3 Moderators per Forum and they can also Moderate other forums

Also start punishing offenders have some kind of order like the following:
1. Warn them VIA Private Message,
2. Warn them Openly,
3. Blur or Delete their post,
4. *Lock Thread*, - I forgot this one previously
5. Ban them temporarily or permenantly

Don't punish everyone for the problems of a few. (Reminds me of BootCamp)

Also thought that you can add a disclaimer below the title in the Index. Kinda like this:

Kill Stories
Kill Stories Note: This Forum contains stories that may be associated with street racing. BonnevilleClub.com does not endorse that activity in any way.

As for assigning mods to certain sections, we always did that over at bonnevilleattitude, before the forum was closed and now that it is re-opened again we did the same even though there are only a couple of them.
But this forum is alot bigger. The only way to do that is to assign them to the section that they know, only problem is that some section are better left with all mods being able to work on them, due to size and amount of posts.

Easier solution to having more mods is for some people to start using more common sense when posting and then they don't have to have a mod read everything they write and have to change or delete it. By getting more mods you are not fixing a problem just adding to it.
