Default 04 impala steering is tough
04 3400 with 130000 miles. Power steering fluid level is good. Makes a knocking sound when turning and steering is hard. Kind of grinds when turning

I know they had issues with the steering shaft. Maybe that binding and causing the noise and hard steering.
