I was seeing the same thing about the 2-3 solenoid in the service manual. I'm hoping thats it. I really don't want to have to shell out $1500 for a rebuild. This all happened while I was having the catalytic converter changed on my daughter'* 99 Firebird as well as her transmission serviced. When it rains it pours around here!

If your good with a wrench, you can change that solenoid yourself. It will take you all day, but it can be done.

That soleniod means that 3rd and 4th gears don't work. That does not mean that if your shifter lever is in D or 3 that you'll have no foward gears.

Sorry..it'* about a 99% chance that your forward band broke.

Then how would it move if shifted in to 1 or 2? I'll have to look at the ATSG again and see if I missed something.

Looking again, if a band is out it looks like the D-2 not forward is out. I could be wrong, got to leave so can't look for now.

Dan... please read the link I posted when I mentioned the foward band. The forward band holds the drum for the foward gears. When that breaks you have no forward.. until you engage another band. That'* where the 1-2 manual band comes into play. Once engaged it'll allow you to get moving if 1 or 2 are selected. Usually there'* a feeling of slippage, but the car will move.

Sorry to seem like I'm pushing this one..... it'* most likely a forward band. I have gotten to know these transmissions pretty darn well. It'* not something I'm proud to say I've learned, because of why I learned it.

If you put the shifter in Drive and have no movement, you do NOT have a solenoid problem. If you put the shifter in Drive and had a slow movement (3rd gear start) that could be a solenoid issue.

I agree with the broken band theory. You could also have a sprag problem. But either way, you have internal problems.
