1998 LeSabre - rear strut request
Curious.....anyone know on 1998 LeSabre limited (140,000 odometer miles) [my vehicle always garaged and has an close to mint appearance] - IF I choose to not trust my working STRUT compressor will still work in the next few days or months (it is now Sept. 201
to install instead of the air leveler strut USE the KYB SR4023 strut [seemingly designed for our vehicles] that includes the boot - BUT :
on the upper [top part] of the strut, is there three bolts or two bolts to secure to the vehicle?
I can feel TWO nuts under the carpet in the trunk - one in an raised metal hole the other in an lower position towards me while standing at the left wheel position? If there ARE three - UMMMM - does that mean the third nut is behind the back seat?
Intend to just remove the socket from the leveler to disable the sensor if I use the SR4023.
The descriptive data provided - to help decide whether it is worth it to use the proper air leveling strut to replace the worn then discover the cost to replace the strut compressor is cost prohibitive. In other words on 20 year old vehicle - is it worth it?
Curious ????- others here did not mention - rear strut replacement requires an wheel alignment.

A few things overlooked in this that I wanted to add.
First off, the rear springs are selected with the assumption that the ELC will be there to pick up ANY load. There was a point that I had blown airbags in my rear struts, and anything more than a child in the back seat, or ANY weight in the trunk caused me grief. If the compressor fails, there is a kit that you can use to route manual air valves to the trunk, and adjust accordingly.
Also, only 2 nuts holding the strut in the tower at the top, however, also be warned that when the suspension is fully extended, the extension is limited by the strut, and can cause the suspension to forcibly drop if the strut is unbolted without proper planning. This can be as simple as using a jack to pick up the spring tension from the suspension and slack the strut.
And yes, you can get a 'quick strut' which has a new mount, or you can move the mount as well once it'* off the car.

My 96 park ave has 166k on the factory rear stuts and the air ride works just fine. and the car sat up unused for nearly 6 years before I bought it and put her back on the road. nothing wrong with the rear air ride system.
