Okay fellers, figure this one out because it'* baffling me. I rotated my tires this afternoon to see if I could get rid of some highway vibration. It seems to have done the trick.

Anyway, I'm on my way home from my brother'* and I noticed something is missing--the clunk! I'm not saying the tire rotation did it, I'm not saying I know what did it but it is gone. I even came to a dead stop and rotated the wheel left and right to the stops-no clunk.

Maybe with such low miles and not being driven for 1-1/2 years it did need some loosening up and was just a coincidence it stopped after the tire rotation. Like I said earlier, it started out clunking both left and right but the left clunk went away about 2 days after I received the car. I've had the car for 4 days now.

It wouldn't surprise be if it comes back but for the time being I'm quite pleased.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

wow, that is really strange... the only thing i could figure is that something wasnt set right and hitting the wheels, the problem on the right side went away on its own, and the left side squared itself out from the car being up in the air...

Yep, I agree. All I can come up with is something "happened" when I had it up on the stands. Tire rotation shouldn't have anything to do with it. I could be wrong. Who knows.

the rotation has no logical impact on the noise.. unless you bumped something in the process

I had the same problem with my 2000 SSEi. I have a friend that is a servie advisor for the local Chevy store and I had him look at it. He told me that I had to replace the entire rack for the steering. Even though my car had 42k on it and was past the 3 year old mark he got all but $200 covered under warranty for me. I was noticing a slight clunking noise whent turning to the right during low speeds. He told me that there was a small problem with the steering mechanisim on these cars and that is how he was able to get it covered under warranty.

Does your buddy have any reference info I can use to take to my dealer on this getting the entire steering rack replaced?

Greg.. chances are it'* not a rack. But once diagnosed by a qualified technician I would agree...anything is possible.

i agree with bill, i dont believe i have ever seen anything about a faulty rack in a bonneville, it is unlikely the cause based on past experience, however, yes, if a qualified technician diagnosed it as so then i would trust his diagnostics

When I say tech..I'd be talking probably a Pontiac certified tech.
