Well I changed the transmission fluid and filter today and that was the problem. It was really nasty, never been changed before. Still had the original steel gasket on it. Now 130,000 miles later it'* finally red again and not black and it'* shifting better than ever and no more high pitch whine. I thank you all but I have found another thing wrong. Today I while I was changing the fluid I found a big ball of green grease around the boot on the rack and pinion towards the passenger side. Could any of you tell me what this could be?? Could the boot have a hole somewhere?? I hope it'* nothing real serious cause I do not have the money for expensive repairs right now. thanks

Thanks for reporting back on what you found Nate. It'* always helpful when someone has a similar problem if a resolution is posted.

I'd suggest that you start a new thread on the grease problem. To start, I'd suggest checking the boots for the CV joints on the axle. Check that, then start a new thread including what you found. It will help keep things on topic, and for future searches.
