Default 2002 SLE Transmission Problem

Hello everyone,

I own an 02 SLE with just under 50k on it and have recently began having shifting problems. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is, as I have little experience dealing with transmissions. I just wanted to know if anyone here has experienced the same type of problem, had any advice, or knew what the problem was.

Problem:
When upshifting (primarily from 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th) I hear a subtle "thunk" sound coming from the engine area, followed by a rough shift. It doesn't do it every time; I think it is usually once the car is warmed up. It is much more evident when accelerating quickly, i.e. merging on to interstate, etc.

Like I mentioned before, I have little to no experience with transmissions. I had the fluid exchanged about 2 1/2 months before it started happening, and have checked it numerous times and it is always full.

Please, if anyone has any advice or information it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have the exact same problem. Most people on this board point to the solenoid valve assembly.

My local dealer said it would cost about $400 to replace it. I'm gonna have it done when I get the time.

Adding Seafoam transmission additive was also suggested. I added some but the problem persists.

thanks a lot! Mine is still under warranty so I'll probably take it in somewhere this week! I really appreciate it.

Is there any advantage to going to the dealer, as opposed to going to a transmission specialist shop?

If it'* under warranty, don't you have to take it to the dealer?
