The only time I use RTV is if the mating surface(*) are pitted. A light skim coat of RTV goes on to seal the pits only.
Typically only water/coolant stuff. I never use it on oil pans or trans pans.

For all of you .... Do not get the Filter and gasket kit from Autozone... They will sell you a kit that contains the cork gasket<----- Worthless...
Advanced sell a kit with a rubber gasket( not near the quality of the factory gasket but a lot better than the cork by far ).. I have been using the rubber gaskets for the better part of 4 or 5 years and have had no issues... The cork was leaking before I could leave stripes in the road

But for the price of the Filter kit from Advanced, I think its $16 for the filter and pan gasket, and the fact that I like to change it yearly I just get the kit.. But It would be nice to have a factory style gasket...
I have seen listed a gasket for the trans pan at advance that was $25ish I think... And it was a Fel Pro gasket.. I'm wondering if its equall to an OEM pan gasket..
