It has a metal hub and a metal outer ring with rubber connecting them between. When the rubber goes bad, the teeth in the middle (that you can't see unless you rip the thing apart) catch and that is what makes the clatter. The teeth are a failsafe so the belt will still turn when the rubber is bad.

It (HB) is making the noise, I'm pretty certain. But there'* enough rubber still there to make trying to move the outer ring seperate from the inner difficult by hand.


When mine went bad, I remember looking at it when the clatter wasn't much yet, saw the cracks like yours, and figured it had a while. Within a week it was cracked all the way around.

Bll, this saturday wouldn't work, as I said. I'll let you and Shadd figure out when you two are meeting up. I'mnot in a huge rush to fix this, but I already have the puller tool and hopefully the HB will be in eather on Friday or Saturday.

Would this also make the car tend to have an inconsistant idle?

You'll want to fix it soon because soon it will sound like your car is falling apart. Mine idled a little rougher than normal.

It'* under the engine teardown section I think...somewhere along those lines.

Yes, you will need to get those 3 magic bolts as your puller probably does not have them...I forgot what size they are supposed to be, but it makes things so much easier.

Would not be a bad idea to let that HB bolt soak in some WD40 or PB blaster overnight before taking the balancer off either.

M6x1 bolts, 60mm long works for my puller.

Crankshaft Balancer = Harmonic Balancer, right?
