It looks like GM used two oil level sensors that take different wiring plugs.

On 3800 series 2 motors this sensor threads in the front side of the oil pan below the AC compressor.

On Series 1, the harness is actually sandwiched between the pan and block, through the gasket.

Default oil light

My 96 does the exact same thing when starting up.
The oil level is fine. I have been meaning to take the bulb out if I ever work on the dash.
You do not have to remove the oil pan to get the oil level sensor out on a 96.
Just simply unplug and unscrew it. Its clear and rather long an in the front of the pan.
I think they are around $20 at Auto Zone.
Or you can just ignor it like I do.

Yes, exactly. Was going to add the same thing. The pan doesn't need to be dropped to change this sensor.

Be careful not to break it when removing it. It is long and you'll have to insert/remove it on an angle to get it in and out. But there IS clearance to do so. I just had to do it on my 99 (changed the oil pan because it was leaking...reinstalled everything...forgot to install the level sensor o-ring...had to take it off to get the o-ring on and did it with the pan installed).

BTW, GM does not sell new o-rings for the level sensor. You have to either reuse the old one (which I did) or take the old one to AutoZone (or the like) to get a fresh one according to a like size.
