Default A/C evap question

Hi all,

Today I followed the evap core cleaning procedure, as detailed in the TechInfo section. Airflow through the dash vents does seem a lot better now

While letting the water drain, I noticed that they're coming out of a small hole at the bottom of the box containing the evap core. I don't know if I'm right here, but to me it makes sense that there should be a hose there that directs that water to a lower point in the engine compartment (near the floor), so engine fumes won't be able to enter the HVAC system too easily. I found a hose that seemed to fit perfectly to that little drain pipe at the bottom of the box, and I'm leaving it there for now. I attached the other end of the hose to the floor of the car under the passenger seat, and A/C generated water are now coming out of there.

Is there normally some kind of hose there that'* just missing on my car? and if not, what prevents engine fumes from entering the HVAC system through that drain hole?

Thanks in advance
