not yet... as macho_mike alluded to, i don't think the upgrade is intended to remedy the surging. i could be wrong, but my understanding is it just addresses some other issues that needed updating. to address the TCC slippage you'd have to get the pcm recalibrated separately. but until a bigger brain weighs in i'm not positive...

i think a new tq converter might do it.

that or a pcm reprogramming.

alright guys here'* the scoop, and frankly i don't know what to think of it. first of all i called a local garage that i trust to see what it would cost to get the ecm flashed/upgraded, and they called me back and said that this was a "dealer only" procedure. i asked them about some of the stuff that drjay had said regarding a one day pass to gm'* codes, but they didn't know anything about it. this meant i had to turn to a dealer.

so right off the bat the dealer i took it to seemed to be confused as to why i wanted the ecm flashed. i told them i had read some service bulletins on the internet that said updating the software (or whatever you want to call it) could help improve shifting performance and other various aspects of the vehicle. they seemed ok with that. then they just called me after looking into the pcm and said that all my codes are already updated and there was nothing new to put on it. the diagnosis on the TCC slippage would have to be a separate thing, i know, but i don't understand how my car could be updated. as far as i know it has never had any computer work done on it since i've owned it. the only repairs have been UIM replacement, water pump and belt replacement, and various other tuneups i've done myself. it has me confounded. any commentary would be appreciated.

Could it have been the previous owner?

i guess it could have been.... i've had the car for two years, has anything new come out since then or would the dealership have updated it before selling it to me? the site drjay referred us to wouldn't display whether or not i had any updates available for my VIN. got stuck on the "retrieving calibration information" screen.

I too have a 97 with surging...i looked into the gm website...there is a flash for a rough tcc lockup/shift into 4th...i was considering sending mine in to be flashed...theres a mail order service that does it...i forget the name....i am living with it for now...it seems the surging is worse right after the tcc locks up under load...such as hill climbing....perhaps it is the tc...

Most of that is covered here:

If you can PM me your vin I'll see if I can find out what updates are available.

hmmm, if i'm reading the general motors ECM update site correctly, the updates for my vin were released in 1998?? so when i bought the car in 2002 from the gm stealership they had most likely updated the car already? i guess that makes sense, can anyone verify this?
