Supposedly you can lower the subframe enough to get the side pan off.

You would need to pop the ball joint, probably the rad hose and then carefully watch things as you lower it.

The problem with the pressure control solenoid has been discussed a few times in the 2000 - 2005 section. Several have had luck freeing up that solenoid by adding a can of SeaFoam'* Trans Tune. At around $6 for the can, it'* worth giving that a try first.

This is how to remove the side cover in the 2000+ series, but I'd think a fair amount of it should be similar to your year. The largest exception likely to be the mounts.
