Just had another GM power window motor fail - up an inch, stop, wait, up another inch...- Turns out that I replaced it the last time with a GM motor - 20421231. Have replaced a number of factory motors that did the same thing with aftermarket and never had this problem, seems to be factory motors only.

Bonneville front doors are a pain since the seat belt is anchored there (thanks to another
fed initiative that required seat belts that did not have to be unbucked - thank goodness that went away) and sever other things need to be unbolted to remove.

Contrary to manual, the door lock solenoid needs to be disconnected to remove the T-bracket but the rod does not need to be removed to R&R the tape/motor. Also it is possible to remove/replace the tape and motor with the window all the way up so no need for multiple tapings.

Just an observatiion.

You may want to replace the motor with a 92+ unit, since those are much faster, I hear. The problem with mine, is they don't get enough current. For example, if I switch on the front Passenger'* window, it is fairly slow, but if I reach over, and flip the switch on the Passenger'* door, it goes twice as fast. This is the same for all the windows, except the Driver'*, since of course, there is only one switch.

I'm having problems with my motor. The two rear seats are really fast, the passenger front is fast too, but the driver side just crawls along, annoyingly slow... that things going to die soon.

the factory motors have a built in circuit breaker that gets weak.
If you could figure out how to beef it up you can still use the motor.
I went through two myself.
I think in the future I will buy a lifetime form advance.
Will the newer bonne motor fit our cars???
Also you don.t have to take out the seat belt assembly.
Just drill out the original motor rivets as well as the upper and lower braket
fasteners and simply put bolts in to re-assemble.

I haven't had any problems at all yet with power windows.

Is it possible for one to swap in manual crank windows in a power window door, and just fill in where the switches were? Not that many are that desperate. Just wondering if it worked that way.

Just to add: Canadian Bonnevilles will not experience this, as ALL Canadian cars, including the '87 have seat belts mounted to the B-pillar. The job is a bit easier for us Canucks.




(Oddly enough, Canadian J-body Sunbird/Cavaliers of similar era have door-belts, I know our old '91 Sunbird did)

The seat belt mounts need to be removed if you want to keep the plastic vapor barrier intact. If not, they don't.

Door belts have always been a pain - wonder if you could swap in the Canadian version.
