Actually when you pull the harmonic balancer on our year you will need to remove a piece from oil system , can't remember if it is what the oil filter sits on ( had my mechanic do it and only glanced at it while I stopped by) so you would need a new gasket to re-assemble it, ( pretty cheap little gasket).

It is very possible that it is the cranks sensor. The belt could have easily hit the wires and pulled them off or damaged them. When my crank sensor was bad it would not start. I also had the belt hit my cam sensor, so the belt does run close enough to wires in the first place, so to have one let go, it could have hit a few different wires.

Also when I had my crank sensor changed he was able to take the old one off and new one on without removing the harmonic balancer.

Huh ? What platic piece ? On my 88 and 90 "C" engines (havn't had to pull the HB from the '92 "L") you just remove the bolt and the balancer slides off. Nothing else to remove other than the serpentine belt.

Now there is a plastic pliece covering the flex plate (flywheel - other end of engine) that you can remove to lock the crank so that you can properly torque the bolt when replacing the balancer (and there are other ways ranging from a length of clothesline to replacing the serpentine belt and using a big screwdriver) but is not necessary to remove. I generally use the starter for removal (do not try in the living room, notary sojack and all that).
