On the drivers side the cv axle will have an inner and outer boot, determine which one you wish to replace, then go to Canadian Tire, Parts Source, Auto Parts Source etc. and ask for a split boot. If they can supply one for your application then all you have to do is remove the rubber and band off of the old boot, clean the area making sure you remove dirt and debri due to the split in the boot, then apply the new grease which most likely will be supplies, and install the two piece boot directions will be supplied. List price depending on inner or outer would probably be $25.00 Canadian each boot. If a split boot is not available then you'll have to remove the cv axle to do the repair.

Good luck

The split boot is at best a temporary fix as you will eventually loose all the grease again.
To repair it correctly you will need to pull the halfshaft out and either change the boot or buy a reman.
Youll need to seperate the front ball joint to do so after you remove the spindle nut and press the taper free.

A remanufactured drive axle is $59. A replacement boot kit (Advance) with a solid boot, two clamps and a pack of grease is $17. Unless you found the torn boot immediately after it opened up, chances are great that the joint has picked up enough grit to grind the joint to ruination unless it is disassembled and properly cleaned, repacked and re-sealed. You cannot do that with the axle on the car. It'* really got to come out and be repaired properly for you to have any chance of saving the joint.

If you do the split boot, expect to be replacing the drive axle in the near future.

If you opt to replace the boot with a solid boot by removing the shaft, the parts house may be able to loan you the clamp tool to save you $20. Most folks opt for the remanufactured axle because the effort is greater to properly replace a boot.

Right now time and confidence in fixing it is the issue. If it was my 2000 I definitely would replace. When you say reman drive axle are you talking the whole piece from boot to boot.
Every time I try to take something apart of this caliber I always spend hours trying to remove stuck bolts. This would atleast take me a whole day or into next day.

Yes, both cv joints and the axle in between them - sometimes called a half-shaft, but properly referred to as a drive axle.

John, it'* really not as hard of a job as it sounds. The hardest part will likely be separating the ball joint, which isn't all that bad of job. Getting the axle ahead of time, it probably won't take you much longer than a couple of hours.

Wallmart sells the remanufatured drive axle complete for my 95 SSEi for about $89.95 each side complete with 2 new cv joints. It'* just a matter of remove and replace. I don't think that price would be much different for your year. Also check Parts Source, and other auto parts suppliers and compare price. If you plan of keeping the car for some time, then get the remanufactured axle.
