Thanks for everyone who made suggestions regarding my running problems. I parked my 87 for a couple of months and finally had her towed to the mechanic. He determined the MAF sensor was faulty, so replaced it, along with the o2 sensor. All in all the bill was around $250.
The 'check engine' light still comes on at times, and faults the EGR code. He told me this would happen, but said it was not going to harm the function of the engine. From what he could tell, the sytem was working fine, but there is a fault somewhere.
The car runs fine now, but the exhaust sort of smells like paint thinner sometimes.
Thanks again all.
