Tach dies when driving
Anyone seen this before? I have a 2001 SLE with 46K miles on it. The car will be fine and then boom..the tach dies and there is like a shudder and then from that point on the tach is dead and the engine will make a pinging noise under load. I can restart the car and the tach comes back.
There'* also a sulfer smell when starting it and a general lack of power.
It'* goes in tomorrow to a dealer but I'm curious if anyone might have a clue.
Thanks a lot!

Well, I wanted to post the fix for the tach issue..Crankshaft position sensor.
I had them replace a hub and bearing, intermediate shaft, 2 coils, plug wires and heated seat element. Everything under extended warrantee except the wires...not bad for $150...wires were $50 with a $100 deductable on the warrantee.
The tach dying continued so I took it back and they replaced the crankshaft position sensor and all is well...this was also covered under the original $100 deductable.

I've seen the exact same tach problem... maybe 4 or 5 times over the past 6 months... very intermittent. Saw something in this thread about a crankshaft sensor. Are you still having problem?
