I have a '97 Bonneville 3.8 NOT SUPURCHARGED!!!!! I went to the Pontiac garage and said my car vibrates when driving it around 1500rpms (it feels like I'm on a washboard, or rumble strips) and it also surges .Before I went there, I checked the tires for balancing, that was OK ,so now the Pontiac garage took it for a ride NO CODES STORED . They took a scanner tool and found that the transmission valve body is worn causing pressure loss . I'm guessing the shuddering that it happening is also due to the torque converter . Anyway they want $1040.31 plus tax to fix this. I want a 2nd opinion!!!!!!!! I think it needs a tranny tranplant instead of fixing the old one . WHAT DO YOU THINK GUYS ???????? Thanks Bruce

I had virtually the same problem as you. In a nut shell- if you can afford a rebuild that'* a better choice than just having the Torque Converter replaced. The job is very labor intensive and why pay for that a second time? I don't know about a transplant though.
I had mine rebuilt but I'm still having the surging problem. Not as bad as before but still there. The shop that did the repair said they would make it right at no extra charge, I just haven't had time to take it in.
One thing is for sure, it'* expensive so it'* best to do it right the first time if you can.

Even after all the work I did on my car, I rebuilt my own transmission, new torque converter, testing my TCC switch, etc. I still get surging. All though not nearly as often as before I adjusted my TCC switch. I suggest turn the switch in 1 tooth and try that, then adjust again if needed. I find mine surges mainly around 45mph, in 4th gear with TC locked. Start going up a small hill and the engine load goes up, but still stays locked up and will surge. I now simply reach down and shift in the 3rd gear and all is well. Then at the top of the hill shift back to 4th. Over the years I have heard many people complain of the same problem. It can be minimized with adjusting the TCC switch, but rarely seems to go away all together. Seems to be a inherent problem with our cars. I even went in and played with the tune in the PCM a bit. My belief on this is a small tuning error where things like throttle position, load, speed, and gear all over lap and cause a conflict. The torque converter then goes in and out of lockup.
But now my oil pressure guage is really jumping around. Enough to trigger a DIC message to check the guage. I haven't touched the op sender since replacing it 8 days ago. I suppose I just need to dig into the wiring diagrams.

1 week after my last post, no surging all week. So hopefully that won't re-appear. I found the source of my oil pressure indication problem. It was a wiring problem in the harness about 1/2" past where the sending unit wires exit the harness. Whoever installed the wiring taped in a "splint" that supported a 4" length of the three wires. Every time the connector was removed from the sending unit the wires would flex just beyond the edge of the splint which eventually broke the wire strands. So I spliced in a new pigtail and connector. That was a real SOB, I had so little length of the existing harness to work with. If I need to repair it in the future I'll have to disconnect the harness from all the sensors underneath the car and pull it up from the back of the engine.

It certainly seems that way. My thanks again to you and everyone else who had troubleshooting suggestions. I really appreciate the people who can spend alot of time on this forum helping others, because I know how little spare time I have.
