Default surging, hesitation only when cold

Hi. New to the forum and thought with all the experience you exhibit you might be able to help me. My 94 surges and jerks and hesitates like mad when first cranked. If you let it idle a couple minutes before driving it runs fine. I swear it feels just like a carb with no choke!! It runs good once it'* ran a little but it has never felt as powerful as my 92 was. Never got a check engine light so I'm not sure if there are any trouble codes. It almost feels as if it'* not getting fuel. I replaced the plugs and wires when I first got it. My first gut guess it th TPS but I'm not too familiar with them (older guy!) Any ideas.?

Default Welcome

First welcome to the forum. Without a doubt you've come to the right place. The folks around here can give you both a little greive and a lot of help. I've been a member about a month and have learned more about my Bonneville and the 3800 engine than in the six previous years of owning my car. Regretably I'm not one of the mechanical wizards here but had a similar problem a couple years ago and new plugs and wires pretty took care of my car. As for being oldfrt I think I have a few on you if the 46 represents your age. WELCOME

Default Thanks buckman

I appreciate the response. Yeah, I'm 46 but feels a lot more most of the time. I make a lot of jokes and kid about being old but it'* really a play on kids who think 46 is ancient!! They're shocked at some of the stuff I do when they find out my age. I've been making Michelin tires for 27 years so I know a little about them. I look forward to all the fun and information this forum has to offer.

Ok, I'm drunk again but i have a backspace key, so it'* ok. The TPS is a very real possibility. I had exactly the same thing happen on a 94 suburban. It was the TPS. JSeabert (next door kid for you new old foks) has a 93 SSE, and his was doing the same thing.....but he had other symptoms, as well. His tps was in gross failure mode. He was throwing code 21 and 22 for either short or open intermittently. However......cold would NORMALLY not have an effect on this. I'm gonna take the safe bet and not put my foot in my mouth on this one. I'd go with the code scan too. Let us know what the results are, if any, and we can go from there. (you could hae a failure on the 'low end' of the tps that wouldn't affect trans kick down or cruise control....being an electronic device, it COULD be affected by heat, as it lives directly above the heat shield)

Default surging & hesitation when cold.

Thanks JR and Willwren for the input. I need to get serious and get it scanned. When I say cold I meant the engine sat for a while. Had the same problem all summer in 97 degree heat!!
If the car sat a while, you can count on having the bucking, surging until it smooths out and gets going. Ane the more you try to give it gas, the worse it gets. I have to lightly ( and very slowly) give it gas until it gets up enough speed to keep from getting rammed by some jerk in a hurry. 4 blocks down the road and it'* fine!! Apparently ambient temperature has nothing to do with it. Just the engine not running for a while.I have cranked it and waited about 30 seconds before driving off and it wasn't as bad. I'm gonna look for a scan today.
Forgot to mention car has 105k on it.
BTW, I found out why some people hate the look of the back end of the bonnies........that'* about all they see!!! ( snicker, snort )
