Defintiely looks like an awesome gathering. Like the others, I wish I were a little closer, so I could have joined in the fun.

You mean you didn't "wake" John up?

They've all been at it for over 3 hours now. Should be almost finished by now. 8)

Probably works out to about 20 hp per hour.

willwren 02-10-2008 04:59 PM

Alot of cleaning so far. Block is ready, some brackets on, timing set is on (all new), timing chain cover, water pump, and oil pan are ready to go on. then lifters, retainers, and heads. The motor goes in like that. About an hour for all that, then we lift. But lunch comes first.

J Wikoff 02-10-2008 05:02 PM

I wish I had this many hands when I was swapping engines... I wouldn't have had to take two days off work.

2000SilverBullet 02-10-2008 06:49 PM

Oh Bill had to take two days off anyways. :bdrunk:

Wendy and I made it home. We stopped in Salem for lunch and we got all the way back to Hillsboro when Wendy realized she forgot her PDA there. We did a turn around and got it. Any ways here are the few pics I took:

Nice toque O'Neil. I would have thought you'd be in a tank top enjoying all that warm weather down there.

2000SilverBullet 02-10-2008 08:52 PM

Bill, what supports the Zilla's trani, when the engine is out :?:

katiewren 02-10-2008 09:43 PM

tranny mounts support it.

motor is in.
dad made me type that

J Wikoff 02-10-2008 09:53 PM

The tranny has 3 mounts. The engine only has one.

willwren 02-11-2008 12:11 AM

Tranny is supported by two mounts on the driver's side (front and rear, front is the one we worked over, Paul), and a dogbone on the tailshaft housing on the passenger side. No support is needed. The motor bolts to the trans, and is supported only by the torque-axis mount additionally.

A few pics, I didn't take many today. There was a ton of cleaning, prepping, gaskets, and torquing involved today. We stayed very busy. Got the INTENSE oil pressure kit and false knock kit installed, the motor is in with everything EXCEPT the LIM, SC, Intercooler, rockers and pushrods. We ran into an axle bind problem on the passenger side while installing the torque-axis mount. It's preventing the motor from coming down on that side. Tomorrow, we'll pull the right side hub and free it up, or replace the axle.

Little trick for holding the backwards bolt in place:
Attachment 35752

So we have to deal with the axle tomorrow, tighten the backwards bolt, hook up the radiator hoses, oil cooler lines, belts, LIM, SC, intercooler, pushrods, rockers, valve covers, and alternator. Alot to do, but not that big of a deal. Just time consuming.

petraman 02-11-2008 12:25 AM

Damn, all work and no play, eh? Well, I guess you'll have your play time when you're finished, right?

Still, looks like you guys are having a great time...

willwren 02-11-2008 12:26 AM

Kinda sad to rip it apart. It was running damn good.

PontiacMom 02-11-2008 10:28 AM

I want to be there.........We have a snowfall warning in effect here, and the power went out at 5:00AM, just long enough to screw up all the clocks in the house, thank goodness long enough to make the camera printer go crazy and wake me up. SO guess what I was doing at 5:15AM :?

I am so glad you are all having a great time. Oh and Honey I miss you......(and your shovelling skills) ;)

SSEimatt93 02-11-2008 10:47 AM

Im heading back to the mother land in a few hours here...might stop in BC tonight for a room.
Hard to say.
Talk about one hell of a time!

myfirstbonnie 02-11-2008 10:48 AM

Hey let John know that I was watching the news and all the passes are opened.

willwren 02-11-2008 12:24 PM

Not sure if John got the word this morning, but he was checking road reports this morning.

John left at 7ish, Matt just left at 9:15. Just me and the shiek now. Finishing up a new mirror (paint) for a friend's Honda, then off to the showers. We'll do a little cleanup, tool sorting, then dork around a bit with the Zilla. If the axle is terminal, we'll move back to the intercooler stuff.

Matt, Matt, and John, thanks a TON for your help. We got alot done, and not just on mine. I really appreciate it, and it was damn good to see you guys again.

John and Matt, we'll see you again in a month or two for the L36 fix. (John will come back down for that weekend).

2000SilverBullet 02-11-2008 12:33 PM

Bill, explain what is up with the axle. I don't understand. The axles are attached to the trani, so how is that affecting the engine install :?:

willwren 02-11-2008 12:37 PM

You have to jack up the passenger side of the motor to install the yoke for the torque-axis mount. It looks like the CV joint bound up in that position, and won't let the engine and trans back down into the mount. We may pull the boot back today and see what's up, then maybe pull the RF hub to help free it up.

When we rotate that wheel, the engine moves up and down, even in neutral. Not a big deal. We'll deal with it when the budget allows for an axle if need be.

willwren 02-11-2008 03:22 PM

John just added an hour to his drive. Found a bridge over the Coumbia on 97 closed. Has to run East to 82 and up through Kennewick.

Pdad and I got the axle out. It's fooked. Going to order a new one (be here tomorrow) and pick up some trans fluid for lilpooky's failing trans (she'll be here at 3 for a transfusion).

Bummer my LSD isn't here. Perfect time to change that axle. Anyway, the motor is in the cradle. We can just tinker with it from here.

EDIT:

Looks like the tripod was fooked to begin with. All 4 corners of each of the 3 bearing sets are beat. That's why it bound up last night on us during the TA mount install. It was only a matter of time before it blew.

GonneVille 02-11-2008 03:37 PM

Sounds like you better check the other axle while you're at it. If that one was so bad, the other one probably isn't much better...

willwren 02-11-2008 04:17 PM

No way to check it without needing to replace the boot. I'll do that when it blows. I'll know, and won't be stranded after the LSD.

Besides, it's the right side axle that takes most of the abuse.

driverjohn2005 02-11-2008 06:03 PM

Just got home, tired as fook!!!! I'll upload some more pics, etc. later tonight :D

willwren 02-11-2008 06:13 PM

Glad you got hom safe, shorty. Thanks again for your help.

AC compresor, PS pump, and oil cooler lines are hooked back up. Backwards bellhousing bolt is in.

Just need to hook up the starter and put the TC bolts in, and we're done underneath.

ROD

PontiacMom 02-11-2008 07:53 PM

The roads are getting worse and worse up here. The highway just north of us is closed, only O'Neil will understand this : Highway 97 Both Directions
Closed in both directions from Junction with Highway 39, south of MacKenzie to Junction with Highway 29, in Chetwynd (147.6 km) because of Avalanche. Estimated time of opening Feb 13 at 4 pm. Updated on Mon Feb 11 at 4:35 pm. (ID# 60126)
Feb 11, 2008 04:35 PM
They are saying on the news that they are not even sure if the road will re-open by the 13th, it all depends on what is happening on the mountains. We are still under a heavy snow fall warning, and now it is supposed to rain tomorrow.......Honey stay where you are until this sh@t blows over. Have fun..........

Gumball 02-11-2008 07:57 PM

You heard her. have another beer :D

PontiacDad 02-11-2008 08:12 PM

Good to hear you made home John, always something with these winter roads, it was great to hook up with you from some laughs and good times 8)
Hope Matt is making good time, havent heard from him yet.

We're about wrapped up under Bill's car, shitty about the axel but good thing we found it now.
We have the rest of the week to finnish the top end, take our time and enjoy some laughs :D

willwren 02-11-2008 08:20 PM

Keep finding more shit to do undernath. Think we'll install the rear manifold to downpipe while it's up, and I forgot I have a new dogbone for the tailshaft housing. We'll pop those in, and reinstall the hood. The axle is the only thing remaining underneath. It's all easy top end stuff. After tonight:

LIM, SC, belts, fuel rail, TB, and all that associated stuff........and the axle. That's about it now. Have a couple more little things to do with the IC setup too. Easy work from here. Figure we have a couple days to tinker (I'm back to work tomorrow) before Pdad's parts get here for his top end.

He's job hunting around here while I'm working the next couple days. I may be able to swing a Friday off this week.......

2000SilverBullet 02-11-2008 08:43 PM

Bill maybe O'Neil can work with that nice old lady at Wendy's. ;)

What about openings at HP :?: He is one of those "wired" electrical types.

driverjohn2005 02-11-2008 11:23 PM

Had 2 problems on my way home.

#1 was the bridge going over the Columbia River was closed. Went 40+ miles too far east, and had to double back.

#2 I got a LARGE coffee form McDonalds which made me stop every hour to relive myself...

I can only imagine what the conversation was here. 8) Nice to see all my BC Boys together (and you too Matt, Wendy, & Katie)! Drinking my brand of beer no less (Molson). <sigh>....it's been far too long since I've been out there. You guys don't even know how close I was to coming out (one click away actually). Airfare is cheap this time of year.

willwren 02-12-2008 11:20 AM

Would've been great to have you Tracy. My nipples are still hard just thinking about it.

Mattski made it back in 15.5 hours. I got a text from him.

Very sore day today. Can't move. Stayed home. Pdad is giving me a back rub right now.

NOT really a mental picture I wanted to occur on a Tuesday morning (or any morning for that matter).

Glad to hear everyone is safe and accounted for.

The pics are great. Nice to see much of the gang all together for a mid-year gathering 8)
