i agree with 93bonni, the trooper had to think quickly of either letting the girl go on aned possibly injuring or killing countless number of motorists or disable the girl, which we kno ultimatly ended in their death, its sad but in the long run it was the best decision. Think about it would you like to be driving down the road with your family and all of a sudden getting slammed in the back by someone going 100+....i think you would appreciate what that trooper did/....there is my 2 cents

Personally I think the cop made a serious mistake in judgement. Was he within his right to do it? Yes. But what of the passenger in the vehicle who was an innocent bystander and possibly a hostage (maybe the driver wouldnt stop to let him/her out). I think if you weigh the possibility of someone getting hurt, with the certainty of someone getting hurt (trees, high speed, fishtail) you have to deal with the now not the possible. Box in, spike strips, even pass and slow down in front.

Things could have ended up way different for everyone if the cop was not in tunnel vision high adreniline pursuit mode. The ultimate person responsible was the fleeing driver but the police could have brought them to justice in more appropriate manner.

My 2 cents (and yes I realize this was a while ago).

They should have broken off the chase after the first 10 minutes when they found out she had no wants or warrants.
Chasing her for over an hour put far more people at risk.
IMHO.
It is now a policy here in BC to break off high speed chases for that reason.

This incident occured many years ago and I think now they have safer means of stopping people.....spike belts for one.

What a waste of two lives for nothing.

Exigent circumstances are hard to judge. Who knows, she could have had drugs or something. Never know. Sad way to go, but the cops have to do their job to protect and serve.

Spike strips....come on. Three lanes in one direction, medium traffic, I don't think so. Do you realize how hard it would be to put them down in the right lane, just as the car is passing by? I wouldn't want to be the cop putting them out either, she could have swerved and hit him.

Box her in...That would have been a decent option. Worth a try I suppose. But getting three+ cruisers up there and boxing in at over 100 MPH isn't going to be very easy.

Whats left other than the PIT? Just continuing the pursuit? That puts all of the TRULY innocent drivers at risk.

Ok, so maybe they were going way to fast for the PIT, but I don't really see a better option. You could just cease the pursuit, but who is to say that she would have slowed down? Atleast when the cops are behind her, there is some signal to the alert drivers out there that someone is driving like **** comming their way.

One other thing, I highly doubt that the lead cop just all the sudden did the PIT. More then likely someone suggested it, or he suggested it and nobody was opposed to it...

Its called protocall. They follow what their department says for them to do in that situation and they have to improvise with what they are given. I love how everyone is so quick to jump on the cop when something happens but when something happens to the public its, innocent until proven guily. Thats bullshit if you ask me. If you think you know so much and could do it so much better, get your *** out there and do it!
Yes i realize like everyone else that it is 7 years old.

Well in the end the title stands DON'T RUN FROM THE COPS!
They are lible to do something like what was shown in the vid so don't give them the chance to do something that drastic and everyone you,cops and anyone else around can go home not to the morge. {/rant}

IMO, the cops should have clearance to use deadly force to end ANY vehicular chase, barring only possible hostages or the involvement of children.
There is only ONE ending to a high-speed chase; somebody wrecks.
I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I have heard of a car chase ended by the driver simply pulling over without the use of force of SOME kind.
Let'* not forget, it doesn't matter if you have no warrants, RUNNING FROM THE COPS IS A CRIME in and of itself, and puts others in danger. I think runners should be charged with reckless endangerment for every single vehicle they pass during a chase, and assault with a deadly weapon for any person they involve in a wreck.
Also, am I the only one who finds it puzzling that there is a seperate offense for killing someone with a 4000lb object as opposed to an object weighing less than one ounce?
