Default 98 Yukon, no park gear

When I try to put the truck in park, a few things happen. First, the dash indicator stays in "R". Second, it does not feel as if it has moved from reverse to park. Lastly, I can turn off the truck and remove the key. It feels more like the shifter link, and not the transmission. Any thoughts or ideas? Also, if I take my foot off the brake, it goes in reverse, confirming the dash indicator. Thanks.

Had my Dad help. Starting in 1, moved through to N and R. The shifter on the trans moves from the rear to the front (clockwise), but the the shift wire bends going from R to P. Methinks inside the trans?

put it in r, disconnect the cable, then try to shift it into park by hand that should tell you if its in the trans or the shifter or cable. shifter mechanism on a rwd/4wd trans is likely accessible with just a pan drop

I can put the car in park manually at the trans. Must be something between the steering column and trans. Thanks for the help. Just got this car, still learning her moods....
