2004 Grand Am stereo install
Hi guys, so I have a 2004 grand am with the stock headunit still installed and I am planning on installing an aftermarket kenwood unit. Anyways my problem is that I went to purchase the plug and play harness for the car and was informed that I will need a special harness to make it work without affecting any of the other equiptment on that harness. This was at best buy and the guys sounded like they werent to sure it was really necessary and told me to call the dealership before I dish out the cash. The harness is $110, and I have already spent hundreds on this stereo and would really rather not emptying my wallet anymore unless its actually neccessary.
I've tried contacting the dealership and they couldn't answer my questions as I was just speaking to service advisors and they didn't want to bother their busy technicians for free information (which I understand). So I thought maybe some knowledgable people in the forum world could lend a hand.
Thanks in advance for all the help, and sorry if this question has been asked many times before, I searched and couldn't find any solid answers.

I think Bestbuy might be referring to the door/idiot chime module. With the factory radio, the ding that you hear comes through your stereo. I believe the module is just a speaker that is mounted inside your dash so you retain the factory ding ding.
You don't need the "special" unit. You only need it if you have OnStar and want to keep it. Otherwise all it does is keep your chimes. I'm supposed to have one of those in my Bonne because I had all the fancy crap, I went with the cheap one and gutted the rest.
Old school FTW.
