plunger under the hood

I'm curious, i haven't traced the wires, but under the hood is a plunger. ive put these in cars before with a remote start. It does however look factory, what does it do? thanks

there is a plunger on the 87-91 in front of the radiator, its for the DIC to monitor whether or not the hood is ajar.
