My 96 Achieva had the same problem with the sensor under the seat but when my messed up it deployed both air bags in my car and let me tell you that scared the out of me but I pulled all of the parts out of an 98 Achieva to fix mine. Also that sensor is called the Air Bag sensor control or something like that.

Just a Quick update.
Don't know If I am going to do any think about right now. We are giving the car to our daughter for her 16th birthday here in a couple of weeks. So I will probable wait until after we give it to her.
I did hear back from myairbags.com and this is what they said..

Hi,

If the car was not in an accident then a reset will not help you.

We would recommend you taking the car to a collision shop or a dealer to have it scanned/diagnosed.

If they tell you that the airbag computer module is bad, then you can give us the part number that is on top of the module, we may have one available for you. If we do have your module it is around $60 -$99.

Thank you

MyAirbags Team

Airbag $49 Module Reset and Replacement : ABS Repair: Climate Control, Seat Belt, Car Clock, Ford Overhead Console Repair : GM Cluster, Dashboard and Instrument Cluster Repair : Myairbags.com

So that is encouraging!
thanks for your replies!

So death dealer,
your sensor went bad and deployed the air bags? Or you were working on the sensor and it went off? I really don't want to mess with the air bag system If there is a chance to set it off, sounds scary!

No I am guessing some how some way it got wet and threw up the light on my dash and I ignored it and a few days later it deployed the air bags. But that was a common problem with the Achieva"* from all of the research I did and GM refused to accept it as a problem and never did a recall on that problem. Also if you feel safer about it I would just leave the passenger side bag disconnected until you was able to get it check. It took me awhile to get up enough nerve to hook up mine so I just replace the air bags but never hooked them up till a few week ago. When I did that every thing went back to normal on my air bags.

I know It'* been awhile but I thought I would give an update. Work has been crazy so I haven't had much time.
I went to a auto body shop and they said they could get the sensor for $450 and 1 hr installation. They claimed that they didn't have the right scanner software to get a code. I went to a local garage and he suggested unplugging everything and cleaning the connectors with a small steel brush and some spray electrical cleaner. He told me to disconnect the neg. battery post and wait 15 minutes before I messed with it. He also said touch the neg. to the pos. to be sure there was no leftover current from the capacitors.
I also contacted My Airbags.com and said they can't fix a bad air bag module but the can reset one that has been deployed.
So at the rate I am going it will be next Nov. before I get it fixed. I would pay the $450 If I was sure It would fix the problem. I found the module under the pass. seat and it doesn't look to hard to get out...now I just need more time. I will keep you updated and thanks for all your help. Brian
