Default How to pull transmission

I own a 98 pontiac grand prix with a 3.1 can any body give me the how to on pulling the transmission from the vehicle.

You basically pull a tranny from below, by having the car on a lift, and supporting the engine from above.....

No lift? Then your best bet is to pull the engine/transmission as a unit from above by removing the hood and lifting both together out of the engine compartment with an engine hoist.....but it is a lot of extra work.....

If you don't have an engine puller or 'cherry picker' or a way to support the front of the car high enough so when you do drop the cradle WITH engine and trans together, then this project is too far out of your league.

I've pulled 3800'* out many times. Sometimes with the trans still attached. Only one time I dropped a trans out from the bottom and left the engine behind. Its not easy. I say, get yourself a cherry picker and pull everything out from the top.

I have never taken a transmission out of a car with the engine attached, if only the tranny had to be removed......the easiest way to do it, is to support the engine from above, with an engine support fixture.....with the vehicle on a lift, the cradle is removed, axles removed, mounts removed, trans cooler lines disconnected, harness disconnected, flex plate bolts removed, a telescoping transmission jack is placed under the tranny and the tranny is unbolted from engine..... the tranny is separated from the engine dowels, and then lowered on the jack......

Easy if you have a lift, and all the proper tools.....

However, like I said, If you don't have a lift, and you don't have the ability to safely raise the entire car high enough for a bottom removal, then your only choice is to pull the engine and tranny as one unit out the top with an engine lift/chain hoist........
