Default Gear shift won't move without using the shift lock release button.

My 2000, Pontiac Grand Prix as of yesterday won't shift into gear without using the shift lock release button. I do hear occasional clicking in the steering wheel and the doors no-longer will all unlock when you use the key. Is the issue linkage out of adjustment or is it electrical with the door locks themselves. Using a screwdriver to engage the transmission has already gotten so not cool.

Have you had the car scanned for codes?

Does the car still drive normally?

Either something isn't seeing the brake switch, or the solenoid to release the shifter isn't working.

But I agree with RJ, get it scanned for codes, preferably at a dealer with a Tech2 diagnostic scanner. They can see all the 'input' switches operate with it. Autozone and the like can not do this. You are looking for B codes, not P codes.

Haven't had it scanned for the B Codes yet. And yes it drives perfectly normal except for having to unlock the shifter from park.

This won't set a code.....

What usually happens is, over time, moving the shifter back and forth, flexes the wire harness......either the wire breaks completely off, or the the insulation stays intact, and the wire is broken inside the insulation, making occasional contact.......

You will have to remove the shifter ****(there is a U clip you have to pull out with a pick....you will see a horizontal slot for it on the front of the ****)....then the top of the console has to come off.....then remove the harness from the shifter and inspect the wires for a break...

If none of the wires are broken, then you have to check each circuit in the harness...
