Over here stick shift is normal for most cars, automatic is normally standard only on upscale models.
I prefer automatic but I'm aware that it hurts performance and economy on otherwise identical models.
Inidentally the BMC 1100 (Austin America) offered a 4 speed automatic option in the '60s, it wasn't a success as the buying public didn't trust automatics, rightly so in that case as the transmission shared its lubrication with the engine - that'* right it used 20w50 oil! - and they wouldnt last much more than 50000 miles.

man trans are better for just about everything a car enthusiast likes to do, and not having to wait for the computer to figure out whats going on.

and chicks who are into cars are way better, my wife was driving a 80'* monte with dual exhaust and an edelbrock top end while we were in high school. i think you have a better relationship if she atleast knows why your always out in the garage.

I love George Carlin, but he didn't realize that automatics were initially marketed to women. Cadillac developed their first automatics (these eventually trickled down to the other GM marques, or better yet, they were inspired by these intial designs back then) to help sell to women so they we're intimidated by the 'complexity' of manual transmissions.

into cars, and asking cute questions definitely! but if they're schooling me, one that knows how to build a carb but not a fuel injection system, thats a different story.

towards women, im sry but i cant believe that. according to old car and driver magazines ive read, rich males were driving automatics long before any plain jane ordinary woman. as for manuals being complex i agree 100% thats why i was unsuccessful at learning because i just cant multitask. and last thing i want to do after a long day at work is shift gears.
